Review "...splendid revision of a fine first edition. There are few readers of [Environmental & Engineering Geoscience] who cannot profit greatly from consulting this book." - Richard E. Jackson, Environmental & Engineering Geoscience"Jozsef Toth is one of the founding fathers of modern hydrogeology, and this book largely distils the findings on groundwater flow systems from his long career. ... The premise of the book, that the concept of groundwater flow systems can be used to explain a diverse range of landscape-scale processes and manifestations such as soil wetness, soil chemistry, ground conditions and solute fluxes, means that this book should be of interest to a wide range of researchers, consultants and students within the soil science, geomorphology and hydrogeological communities." - European Journal of Soil Science"Toth's clear presentation of the theory, evaluation, and practical applications is as inspirational as his original works particularly because of the care he takes to demonstrate how these systems are significant geologic agents in their own right. Anyone interested in improving their understanding and appreciation of groundwater-flow systems, whether a student or an experienced professional, will enjoy reading and being inspired by Toth's latest work." - Hydrogeology Journal"Toth's book is a lucid, lavish account of the development of the theory for gravity-driven flow, its manifestations in the hydrologic cycle, and its applications to practical aspects of water resources engineering and geology. It is extremely well written, organized with great scholarship and numerous literature references, and beautifully illustrated with a perfect balance of scientific diagrams, hydrogeologic maps, and field photographs. ,,, Gravitational Systems of Groundwater Flow is a truly unique and career-defining contribution to the hydrologic sciences, well suited for teaching and reference. I'll store it on my ''magnum book shelf '', next to the most transformative modern hydrogeology texts published, books by Freeze and Cherry (1979), De Marsily (1985), Domenico and Schwartz (1997), and Ingebritsen and Sanford (1998). All I can say now is 'Well done, Professor Toth, well done!" - Grant Garven, Geofluids"There are many books that explain the equations governing groundwater flow, but I am aware of no others that focus primarily on concepts related to regional-scale gravitational groundwater flow and do so from a truly geologic perspective; emphasis is inherently placed on the commonly overseen, yet critical, connection between shallow and deep flow systems. It is this unique aspect of the book that lends it considerable value as a hydrogeologic reference for a broad range of earth scientists." - Andrew H. Manning, Economic Geology"Nearly any field practitioner will find a situation relevant to their own work, and any one case would make a fine investigation for a graduate seminar. ...The book is engaging reading for anyone interested in basin-scale flow. Scientists who create or interpret numerical models of groundwater flow will find it particularly relevant." - Ground Water"All students possessing this background knowledge will benefit from the clear presentation of the material contained in this work. Recommended." CHOICE"Students will benefit from the combination of theory coupled with real-life examples presented in the book." Journal of the American Water Resources Association

About the Author József Tóth began his study of geophysics in Hungary in the early 1950s, but moved to the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1956 following the Hungarian revolution. He later emigrated to Canada, where he joined the Alberta Research Council in 1960. He shifted the paradigm of strata-bound groundwater flow in drainage basins to cross-formational water movement by two ground-breaking papers in 1962 and 1963 before defending his PhD thesis in Utrecht in 1965, and has contributed fundamental concepts and observations to the role of groundwater as a geologic agent. He joined the University of Alberta in Canada as a sessional instructor in 1966 and as a full-time faculty member in 1980. He currently holds the postitions of Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta, and Titular Professor at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. Professor Tóth has received many awards for his work in hydrogeology, including the first O.E. Meinzer Award from the Geological Society of America in 1965; the 1999 President's Award from the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH); the 2002 Prix R.N. Farvolden Award from the Hydrogeology Division of the Canadian Geotechnical Society; the 2003 M. King Hubbert Science Award of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) of the USA; and the 2004 C. V. Theis Award of the American Institute of Hydrology.
