I have been managing complex supply chains for the aerospace industry for at least a couple of decades and have installed collaborative supply chain applications at several airlines and OEMs. I find "Essentials of Supply Chain Management" a refreshing, easy, and informative read for the practitioner. Having recently gone through several text books written by academicians I find that even the best of them lacked the touch and the feel of real life supply chain issues. Most hands on managers however need to know the latest technologies and best business practices that might help them solve real life problems. Michael Hugo's book comes close to achieving that goal. The simulation model at [...] works hand in hand with the book. It allows paractioners the opportunity to put to test some of the concepts described in the book. The book and the simulation model can but does not have to be used concurrently to help managers formulate and test assumptions relevant to their own operation. With customer experience at the top of SCM manager's agenda these days, this book shines a light on a road not strictly dedicated to the theory of constraints with a single minded focus on maximizing throughput. I wish I could take the knowledge in your book and implant into some of the people in my organization! The thrill of reading your book was that it reflected many of my own thoughts and experiences. It was an exciting couple weeks of reading for me and to know someone out there thinks like I do. I initially started reading the book to get an understanding of private sector logistics. What I found was many of my experiences in the military, good or bad, could be traced to how the organizations perceived their own logistics networks.
Good summary book, but it is not meant to be comprehensive quantitatively, which is why it recommends a few other books. Overall, a good starting point to begin learning supply chain management.
This book was recommended and helped my pass a Supply Chain class and was used when in my career as well. Great first step and well written into the life of the Supply Chain and how supply chains are all around us in our daily lives. From how we move freight to how we make our meals. Understanding the supply chain will allow us to avoid bottlenecks and streamline processes. Great essentials book.
I really enjoyed reading this. It provides a good overview of the basics and was easy to comprehend.
This book starts out as a great introduction to the area of supply chain management. The second half of the boon however felt like a lot of hand-waving about RFID and real-time collaboration, along with some attempt to explain how to do project management and design of IT systems. This part didn't feel nearly as well written as the first. I'm also not sure it was really needed.
Outstanding introductory book on supply chain management. Well organized and well written numerous examples, charts, diagrams, uses the terminology the professionals in the field use on a day to day basis in addition to the academic backgrounds to the concepts in the book. Highly recommended for every person in the business field.
Standard text, I will use it to teach my master's degree course. Maybe could be a bit more quantitative.
